Independent Australian law firm McCullough Robertson has announced the promotion of 18 senior lawyers across its Brisbane and Sydney offices, effective 1 July 2025.

Among the appointments is James Lynagh (pictured), who has been elevated to partner in the firm’s insurance and corporate risk team in Brisbane.

With over 14 years at the firm, Lynagh possesses broad expertise in insurance matters, advising on issues including compliance, indemnity, liability, quantum, statutory entitlements, and contribution.

Chair of partners Kristan Conlon welcomed Lynagh to the partnership, highlighting his journey through the firm and the growth he has demonstrated throughout his career.

“I am delighted to welcome James to the partnership, as we continue to provide opportunities for growth to our talented, down-to-earth and approachable people. Like me, James started at McCullough Robertson as a graduate, and it has been fantastic to see him learn and grow as his career has evolved,” Conlon said.

“I am excited about the contribution James will make as a partner as we adapt to meet ever-changing market needs and align our focus to strengthen the support we have provided to our clients since 1926.”

In addition to the partner appointment, the firm has elevated three lawyers to special counsel and 14 to senior associate.

New special counsels include Claire Hart (real estate, Brisbane), Julia Lane (construction and infrastructure, Sydney), and Nikhil Ullal (digital and intellectual property, Sydney).

The senior associate promotions: Bernard Dwyer (employment relations and safety, Brisbane), Danika Tobin (finance, Brisbane), Deekshita Ardham (litigation and dispute resolution (Sydney), Elise Emmerson (tax, Brisbane), Emma Croskery (employment relations and safety, Sydney), Jack Howe (employment relations and safety, Brisbane), Jenna Northey (construction and infrastructure, Sydney), Jude McLeish (corporate, Sydney), Laura Sclavos (corporate, Brisbane), Michael Tuohy (employment relations and safety, Sydney), Rachel Oost (construction and infrastructure, Brisbane), Rob Sosnowski (corporate, Brisbane), Steven Valev (insurance and corporate risk, Brisbane), and Tom Sutherland (real estate, Sydney).

Conlon said: “These appointments are evidence of our strong pipeline of talent, future partners and leaders of the firm. They bring fresh ideas and diverse perspectives and have demonstrated their commitment to our clients’ success and their ability to deliver practical and commercial solutions. I am excited to see their careers develop.”

This news follows the appointment of a corporate partner from Hazelbrooke Legal at the start of the month, as well as the addition of two partners in Brisbane and Sydney in April this year.
