Global law firm Baker McKenzie has appointed a special counsel to support the continued growth of its Melbourne employment law practice.
Baker McKenzie has strengthened its Melbourne employment law practice with the appointment of Marie Costa as special counsel, marking a continued period of growth amid rising client demand.
Costa brings significant experience in regulatory compliance and enforcement, particularly within the evolving landscape of workplace health and safety (WHS) law.
Before joining the global firm, she spent more than eleven years at national law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth, where she began her career as an associate, advanced to senior associate, and most recently held the role of special counsel for over eight years.
In a statement, Baker McKenzie highlighted her extensive experience advising both public and private sector clients on a wide range of matters, including critical incident responses, regulatory investigations, prosecutions, and coronial inquests.
She has also been involved in high-profile public inquiries, such as royal commissions and proceedings before the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).
Anne-Marie Allgrove, national managing partner at Baker McKenzie, shared how Costa’s breadth of experience across regulatory compliance, white-collar crime, and public inquiries made her a strong addition to the team.
“Marie comes to us with extensive experience advising public and private sector clients on regulatory compliance, investigations and proceedings. Her expertise spans workplace health and safety, white-collar crime, coronial matters and inquiries. We are thrilled to welcome Marie,” Allgrove said.
Commenting on her new role, Costa expressed her enthusiasm about joining the firm amid a period of major change in workplace regulation.
“I am delighted to be joining Baker McKenzie’s esteemed employment and safety practice. I am looking forward to working with a leading global firm to support its clients, particularly during a time of significant growth in workplace health and safety regulation and enforcement in Australia,” Costa said.
This news follows the firm’s promotion of 23 lawyers in Australia, including one partner, earlier this month, its election of a London-based partner from its international trade, compliance, and investigations team to the role of global chair in June, and the addition of special counsel Lisa Mazor in May.
