James Hall (pictured) has joined Jones Day’s Brisbane office as a partner in the firm’s labor and employment practice, coming over from global rival Ashurst.

With 25 years of experience in the field, Hall brings extensive expertise in advising on a wide range of employment matters, including discrimination, industrial relations and disputes, and workplace health and safety.

In a statement, the global law firm highlighted Hall’s experience in occupational health and safety, noting his representation of clients in catastrophic workplace incidents, particularly within the coal mining sector.

Liz McRee, co-leader of Jones Day’s labor and employment practice, praised Hall’s expertise and experience, describing him as a valuable strategic addition to the firm’s international team.

“James is a respected Australian labor and employment lawyer who has advised clients in high-stakes cases, particularly related to matters in the energy and resources sector,” McRee said.

“His experience advising clients on discrimination, industrial relations and workplace safety issues is an excellent complement to our global practice and I am pleased to welcome him to the Firm.”

John Cooper, partner-in-charge of Jones Day’s Brisbane office, emphasised Hall’s important role in the ongoing growth and expansion of its labor and employment practice in Australia.

“His experience across all aspects of labor and employment law is an important addition to, and expansion of, our existing Labor & Employment Practice in Australia led by Adam Salter, which advises clients on labor and employment law issues, corporate transactions, and employment disputes in the technology, financial, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors,” Cooper stated.

“He will be a great asset to our clients in Queensland, Australia, and around the world.”

Speaking about his new role, Hall said he was drawn to Jones Day because of the firm’s track record of securing significant legal victories for clients and its seamless global integration of employment law specialists.

“Jones Day is renowned for obtaining some of the most important legal victories for clients worldwide in labor and employment law, including matters related to a full spectrum of employment practices and a number of high-profile labor relations disputes,” Hall noted.

“I was especially attracted to the Firm’s seamless integration of employment law practitioners around the world, as well as the close partnership with lawyers in other key practice areas, such as M&A and Business Reorganisation & Restructuring. I look forward to collaborating with my new Jones Day colleagues throughout the Firm.”

This news follows the firm’s appointment of two corporate partners to its Sydney office earlier this year, both joining from global rival Hogan Lovells.
