The chief executive partner of one of Australia’s leading full-service commercial law firms has unexpectedly stepped down, bringing to a close a 14-year tenure at the helm of the national law firm.
HWL Ebsworth has announced the shock retirement of chief executive partner Russell Mailler (pictured), ending a 14-year tenure with the national law firm.
The firm’s chair of partners, Jamie Restas, confirmed that Mailler informed HWL Ebsworth last week of his decision to retire from the partnership and pursue other opportunities.
Mailler will continue in the role until the end of April, when he will officially step down and conclude his duties.
Since joining HWL Ebsworth in 2011 as national marketing manager, Mailler spent nearly a decade in the role before advancing to chief strategy officer for three years, ultimately becoming chief executive partner, a position he has occupied for close to two years.
Mailler stepped into this position after the firm formalised a new leadership structure after the tragic death of its managing partner, Juan Martinez, in early 2024.
Restas praised Mailler for his lasting impact at the national law firm, noting his pivotal role in defining the firm’s profile and guiding a smooth transition of its governance and leadership structures.
“Over the last 14 years, Russell has made a significant contribution to the firm and played an instrumental role in building the firm’s profile and delivering a successful transition of our governance model and leadership function,” Restas said.
“We are grateful for Russell’s contribution and service to the firm and wish him every success in his future endeavours. The firm plans to celebrate his contribution at our Partner’s Conference in March.”
HWL Ebsworth confirmed that the firm is actively searching for a new chief executive partner to succeed Mailler, a role that will see the appointee work closely with CEO Kris Hopkins.
This news follows the firm’s appointment of three new partners and the elevation of 65 staff members through the firm’s national network at the start of the year.
