National law firm Johnson Winter Slattery has promoted a team member to a newly created firm-wide role as partner and head of AI, strengthening its focus on integrating artificial intelligence across the practice.
Jan Hards (pictured) has been appointed partner and head of AI at Johnson Winter Slattery (JWS), taking on a newly created firm-wide role aimed at advancing the firm’s artificial intelligence strategy and capabilities.
As the head of AI, Hards will lead the development of AI-driven legal solutions for clients, while continuing to advise on M&A transactions, corporate governance, foreign investment and broader strategic matters.
In his new capacity, Hards will be responsible for advancing the use of artificial intelligence across the firm’s core practice areas, including transactions, disputes and regulatory work.
This includes developing AI-enabled offerings designed to improve efficiency and consistency in service delivery, as well as working directly with clients on co-development projects tailored to specific needs.
The national law firm also confirmed that the role will involve overseeing its “AI adoption roadmap”, with a focus on equipping lawyers across the firm with the skills and confidence to use AI tools effectively and responsibly in practice.
Jeremy Davis, managing partner at JWS, highlighted that Hards’ appointment reflects a broader commitment to embedding artificial intelligence at the centre of how the firm delivers legal services, with a focus on improving client outcomes.
“This appointment reflects our commitment to embedding artificial intelligence at the heart of how we deliver legal services,” Davis said.
“Jan’s combination of deep transactional expertise and a genuine passion for legal technology makes him uniquely placed to lead this important initiative.
“The role ensures that our AI strategy is grounded in improving outcomes for clients, reinforcing JWS’ position as a market leader in legal innovation and technology.”
Speaking about his new role, Hards shared that he is excited to step into the position at a pivotal moment for the legal profession, viewing AI as an opportunity to enhance the quality, speed and value of legal advice.
“I am delighted to take on this role at JWS at such a pivotal time for the legal profession. AI presents an extraordinary opportunity to enhance the quality, speed and value of the advice we provide,” Hards said.
“I look forward to working with our clients to deliver intelligent AI-led solutions and guiding colleagues across the firm, while also continuing to advise clients on complex corporate transactions.”
This news follows the firm’s appointment of the leading tax lawyer and former national head of Clayton Utz’s tax practice at the beginning of February.
