HWL Ebsworth has appointed Kris Hopkins as its new chief executive officer (CEO), with the firm’s national board formally confirming the leadership transition on 30 April.

The news comes on the heels of the national law firm’s move towards a more streamlined leadership structure, marked by the transition to a single-CEO model.

With more than 15 years at the national law firm, Hopkins was first appointed CEO on 1 July 2024, following the sudden passing of HWL Ebsworth CEO Juan Martinez in March of the same year.

In the wake of Martinez’s unexpected passing, Hopkins and chief executive partner Russell Mailler stepped into leadership roles, guiding the firm through a complex and uncertain period of transition leading up to this announcement.

However, following Mailler’s unexpected departure in February after 14 years with the national law firm and the firm declaring it now “well-positioned for its next phase”, the board formally confirmed Hopkins in the role.

As part of Hopkins’ appointment and the firm’s transition to a single-CEO structure, HWL Ebsworth has further strengthened its leadership team, elevating Brendan Earle to senior partner and adding a chief marketing officer, general counsel, and head of digital intelligence.

The new leadership structure took effect on 20 April.

Jamie Restas, chair of HWL Ebsworth, shared how Hopkins has been a key leader for the past 15 years, describing his appointment as a natural progression aligned with the firm’s position, its focus on sustained success, and future ambitions.

“Kris has played an important role in leading the firm and has been part of management for the past 15 years, and this appointment represents a natural progression in alignment with our current position, our focus on sustained success, as well as our future ambitions,” Restas said.

Hopkins expressed optimism about the firm’s future, sharing how he is eager to work with the board, leadership team and staff to unlock its full potential in this new era.

“We have demonstrated that consistent high-quality client delivery is built on an authentic, transparent culture that creates an environment of sustained success,” Hopkins said.

“I am looking forward to working with the board, our leadership team, and with our people to unlock our potential as we enter this exciting era for the firm.”

On top of this, the firm has confirmed that it will shortly be launching its employee value proposition to the market.
