The Liberal Party runs through the veins of Greg Hunt. The shadow minister for climate action, environment and heritage has been the member for Flinders on the southern outskirts of the Mornington Peninsula since 2001. His father Alan Hunt was a state Liberal MP for over 30 years before him. "I regard myself as a custodian of progressive liberal values," Hunt said.

After graduating from Melbourne University, Hunt spent one year as an articled clerk with Mallesons before becoming an associate to the Chief Justice of the Federal Court and working as an intern with the United Nations Centre for Human Rights in Geneva. From 1994 to 1998 he was a senior advisor to Alexander Downer. "My experience in the law gave me a sense of the importance of the rule of law," Hunt said.

Describing his time with the UN as the highlight of his legal career, Hunt said that his experience in the profession has influenced some of his policy positions, citing support for the self determination of East Timor as an example.
