Before you go...Australian and British recruitment consultants contacted by Lawyers Weekly offered a number of tips for Australian lawyers thinking of making the move to London.

1. Don't go to London without a job: if lawyers are in a good position here in Australia, they should sit tight until they actually receive an offer. As Jonathan Walmsley, Marsden International director puts it: "[Lawyers] really do spoil their chances of being picked up by a top-tier firm if they're taking that risk ...Things are picking up, things are improving, but you can't just go over and guarantee yourself a job."

2. Make sure you have between four years and seven years' experience

3. Check what visa you are eligible for and know your requirements: see www.visabureau.com/uk/default.aspx

4. Don't apply to firms that are not looking: firms are still not recruiting speculatively

5. Clean up your CV: give an indication as to what your input on a deal actually was, rather than simply listing it

6. Prepare for interviews: interviews can be very technical, so it is essential to be familiar with the deals and other experience listed on your CV

7. Be patient: recruiters say the process is taking a long time at the moment
