Movers & Shakers: Tim Castle, Atanaskovic Hartnell
Attracted to the opportunity to work in a boutique firm doing a mix of litigation, corporate/commercial and advisory work, former senior ASIC executive and commercial law barrister Tim Castle joined Atanaskovic Hartnell as a partner in June this year.

"I left the bar about the time I started an MBA and I developed an interest in strategy and the management of legal problems and other challenging issues, rather than pure litigation," Castle explains.

"In the last four years I have been able to look at these issues from a number of perspectives - as a sole practitioner, as general counsel at Competitive Foods, as a senior executive at ASIC and now as partner at Atanaskovic Hartnell."

In his new role, Castle leaves behind 15 years as a barrister, focusing on commercial litigation and corporate/commercial matters (including trade practices), providing advice for a number of clients including Competitive Foods.

At ASIC, Castle led the Storm Financial investigation team through its primary investigation phase, starting with the winding-up of Storm in March 2009.

He was also a key executive involved in planning for the implementation of ASIC's new credit jurisdiction in July 2010.

"I left the bar about the time I started an MBA and I developed an interest in strategy and the management of legal problems and other challenging issues, rather than pure litigation"

Up until 2007, Castle practised at Seven Wentworth Barristers' Chambers, specialising in major commercial and trade practices cases, including appearances for Telstra in Seven's C7 litigation and Competitive Foods in its franchise rights defence and $75 million damages award against Burger King.

Castle says transitioning through a number of different roles has been extremely beneficial to his career.

"There is often no one clear solution to a situation and I think it has helped to be exposed to a range of completely different perspectives in each of these roles," he says. "It's good for your understanding of not just the problem in hand, but also of the people you work with."

Having worked with a number of executives and in-house counsel throughout his career, Castle, with another former barrister, is now interested in developing the idea of persuasion in the workplace.

"One of the interesting things I have noticed as I have moved through my different roles, building on my management training, is the range of ways in which people make decisions and how you can help them reach an outcome."
