LEGAL AID in the Australian Capital Territory has installed a new chief executive officer in Andrew Crockett.
A former director of the Victorian Legal Aid Commission, Crockett has had a long involvement with Legal Aid, stretching back to 1978. He was a senior lecturer in law at Monash University over the last decade, a member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal, and a board member of the Springvale Monash Legal Service in Melbourne.
“[Crockett] has an unrivalled record of service to people needing legal aid in Australia,” said Denis Farrar, president of the ACT Legal Aid Commission.
“He is committed to providing legal assistance to needy Australians and has worked in that area for many years. [Crockett] has vast experience as a lawyer in all of the areas of legal need which the ACT Legal Aid Office services. In addition he has management skills and experience in running one of the largest legal aid offices in Australia.”
Farrar also paid tribute to outgoing CEO Chris Staniforth, who served for the last 18 years, and the ACT Legal Aid team at large.
“[Staniforth] has been an exemplary leader of Legal Aid ACT and has formed links with all other legal service providers here and nationally. [He] is one of the pre-eminent legal aid lawyers in Australia and he will be hard to replace. The Legal Aid Commission believes that [Crockett] will ably fill those shoes.”
Crockett will start work with the Commission in mid-November 2006.
