Reserve Bank names new GC

A general counsel with over two decades of experience across three major banks has been named as the new GC for the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Martin Thomas has been appointed as general counsel at the RBA, leading the bank’s legal team.

In a statement, the RBA said that this team provides legal services, manages legal risk, and provides strategic advice to support the delivery of its charter functions and priorities.

 
 

Thomas brings over three decades of experience to the role, the Reserve Bank went on, in financial services, banking, and payments law.

He comes across from Commonwealth Bank, where he served as the executive general manager and general counsel, customer services legal, for nearly five years.

Prior to this, he served in the role of executive, general counsel, corporate and institutional banking at National Australia Bank, and before this, worked at Deutsche Bank for over 15 years, including as the co-head of global markets legal in the Asia-Pacific region.

He has also worked in private practice, at King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney and Linklaters in London.

Martin holds a bachelor of commerce and bachelor of laws from the University of NSW.

He will commence in his role at the Reserve Bank on 10 November.
