In Folklaw’s experience, lawyers aren’t particularly partial to nicknames, but one UK lawyer is quite happy to wear the moniker of ‘Merlin the Magician’...

Gwyn Lewis, of Manchester-based Burton Copeland lawyers, specialises in defending those accused of road offences and was, according to his website, given the name by Manchester City Football Club personnel because he has “made many worrying cases disappear”.

The Guardian reports that the next case he is hoping to make “disappear” is one concerning current Man City star Carlos Tevez.

Tevez is waiting to see if he will be charged after being arrested last week (7 March) for allegedly being caught behind the wheel seven weeks after being banned from driving for six months.  The Argentinian striker could face jail if convicted.

Tevez is far from the first footie player Lewis has represented, and he has testimonials on his website from footballers Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Danny Mills, as well as a number of British actors and businessmen.

Folklaw supposes, with their penchant for getting into trouble, celebrities and footballers are a pretty good client base to cultivate...

Lewis has been concentrating on defending driving offences for more than 20 years and, according to his profile, “has developed a track record of unrivalled success”.

Certainly sounds like he’s pretty driven...
