In the US there is a growing pool of lawyers scrambling for work - Law.com even reports that some are prepared to work for free in order to gain some necessary experience to fit the changing market conditions.

But for those with healthy pay-out packages in their bank accounts, the joke is on their former employers as they set out partying the once billable hours away.

A lawyer who was recently laid off from a small North Carolina firm told his local radio station, WFAE 90.7 FM, about the current situation that he and many of his college buddies are experiencing. "I know people who haven't done a thing literally since August [and who] will go out drinking seven nights a week until two in the morning," he said.

Similar situations could soon crop up locally in Australia, especially with large numbers of employees in certain law firms being pushed out with one single sweep of the brush.

The close to 100 employees retrenched from Blake Dawson should have plenty of friends to party with.
