The court fined the manager of the factory 1,500 rupees (AU$14) and issued a suspended sentence of six-months hard labour over the company's failure to eradicate mosquitoes on the premises, according to a Reuters report.
Sri Lankans have been battling an outbreak of the mosquito-borne dengue fever, which has caused the deaths of over 150 people and infected close to 14,000 in 2009, according to statistics from the country's Health Ministry, with officials ordering the destruction of all mosquito breeding grounds with insecticides and the removal of standing fresh water sources.
Folklaw imagines the court ruling has posed a double blow to the company, as its mosquito infestation is not exactly a ringing endorsement of the effectiveness of the company's bug repellent products.
