A German judge has become the coolest judge on the block after letting 42 speeding drivers off the hook in one week because he thinks speeding laws are there only to line the state's pockets.

Reuters reports that Judge Helmut Knoener simply wanted to take a stand against the current practice of prosecuting speeders, so threw out all 42 cases pertaining to lead feet.

Apparently, Knoener believes speed controls are not in place to ensure greater road safety, but rather to provide the cash-strapped government with an additional source of revenue (now there's a novel argument).

Knoener also sees no legal justification whatsoever for using photos in speeding-related court cases and has called for clearer regulations on how, when and where speed controls can be used.

Needless to say, 62-year-old Knoener has been "the man" on the bench over the past week, but speeders who think they've escaped scot free may still be in for a shock, with the Public Prosecution Service still able to appeal the sentences.
