THE QUEENSLAND LAW Society is attempting to break down old fashioned views of solicitors through a major advertising campaign launched today.

Law Society president Rob Davis said he hoped the campaign — which will include highway billboards and banners on Brisbane city buses — would reduce the public’s nervousness about approaching solicitors for advice.

“Solicitors are bound by the highest ethical standards and their commitment to confidentiality is absolute. We want the public to understand that consulting a solicitor means getting an expert on your side as a guide and advocate,” he said.

Davis said the campaign, named ‘Solicitors — Your Experts’, would also highlight the “great diversity” of the legal profession and stresses that lawyers “are not just experts in their particular areas but friendly and approachable”.

He encouraged solicitors and their clients to “be open and upfront with each other” and “make sure that fee structures are well understood”.

“Our members are keen to have ongoing, mutually respectful relationships with their clients based on a shared approach to problem solving, discretion and trust.”

The campaign was launched by Chief Justice Paul de Jersey at a breakfast attended by senior representatives of the profession in Brisbane.
