10 key justice issues must be addressed in Vic election, says LIV
Major political parties need to outline to all Victorians how they intend to address a myriad issues confronting the legal profession and the broader community in the run-up to the state’s election, according to the Law Institute of Victoria.

LIV has launched its ‘Call to Parties’ campaign, which it says outlines 10 key justice issues for consideration and response before the November election in Victoria.

“The LIV has canvassed the views of our members and worked with our legal stakeholders to identify the most significant justice issues in the community and the law and order problems that need to be debated during the election,” LIV president Belinda Wilson said.
The 10 issues listed by LIV are: access to justice, court resourcing and services, metropolitan and regional legal infrastructure, health and wellbeing of the judiciary and legal profession, property and environmental law changes, judicial independence and discretion, accountable policing, health justice partnerships, justice reinvestment and young people, and human rights protections.
“These problems can be addressed through planning, investment in resources and infrastructure and a commitment to supporting the legal system,” Ms Wilson said.
“If the political parties focus on these issues and commit to resolving these problems, we can help the most vulnerable in our community, cut court delays, tackle mental health issues in the profession and make a real difference for all Victorians.”
LIV members have been urged, she continued, to share the Call to Parties report with colleagues and raise the issues at public forums and meetings with community leaders and local MPs.
