Nathan Weinberger - Sydney’s Trusted Name in Complex Property Law

When property disputes escalate or a strata building is need of renewal or collective sale, Nathan Weinberger is the lawyer other lawyers send clients to. How did you start down this career path?

My career started in property development, working at Meriton, one of Australia’s largest and most dynamic developers. That experience gave me a deep understanding of the commercial pressures, regulatory complexities and risk and opportunities arising in undertaking large-scale property development projects.

From there, I moved into private practice, honing my skills at several large leading firms, including a formative decade across HWL Ebsworth, Norton Rose Fulbright, Gilbert + Tobin and Colin Biggers & Paisley, where I was exposed to high-value, strategic work on marker-leading transactions. These experiences gave me a solid commercial and legal foundation. Building on that I have curated a practice that balances technical excellence with quality service focussing on achieving results aligned with the client’s objectives.

In 2020, I launched Weinberger Lawyers with the goal of being the go-to firm for complex property matters and property and commercial litigation.

What inspires you in your role/industry? Why?

I am inspired by helping people who are being ignored or underestimated just by the way they present or the first impression they may give. Whether because they do not speak perfect English, they communicate differently, or they are just unfamiliar with the legal system. The legal world can be perceived to them as opaque and exclusive. I take pride in making it more manageable and navigable for clients who might otherwise find it challenging to access the justice system.

At the same time, I thrive in the complexity. I love solving hard problems including factually and legally complex litigation, urgent injunctions, messy planning issues, regulatory overreach. The more technical, sensitive or “in the too-hard basket” a matter is, the more I want to take it on. That’s where I do my best work.

What's your approach to customer service that separates you from the rest?

Clients come to me when the stakes are high, and I never lose sight of that responsibility. My approach is based on clarity, responsiveness, and deeply strategic thinking. I make complex legal issues understandable and give clients clear direction in high pressure situations.

We also treat every client with respect. This is regardless of their background, communication style, or experience with the legal system. At Weinberger Lawyers, clients are taken seriously and treated like partners in their own matter while at the same time making clear to them the role of us as their lawyer to deliver advice which is direct and at times uncomfortable. That’s what makes us different.

How do you innovate and stay ahead of industry trends?

We have built Weinberger Lawyers from the ground up around what modern clients actually need: looking at old problems in new ways: rethinking litigation and commercial strategy, reframing negotiation approaches, and staying agile and strategic in everything we do.

In so doing, we draw on the collective experience of our team who have deep experience across a broad range of high value, complex litigation and transactional work at leading firms and institutions.

On the legal side, I stay ahead by constantly engaging with legislative and regulatory change, particularly in areas like planning law, strata, development approval, and property disputes.

What is the toughest challenge you've faced in your role? How did you overcome it?

The toughest challenges often involve seeing how unfairly some clients are treated simply because they do not communicate in a “typical” way or because English is not their first language. I have seen it firsthand from opponents in courtrooms and negotiations, and frankly, it’s disturbing. People are written off too easily.

That’s one of the reasons I take such pride in representing these clients. I’ve had matters where the other side underestimated us, dismissed our client’s case or tried to drag things out hoping we’d back down. We didn’t - and we won or settled on terms satisfactory to our client.

In a matter involving a forced sale we had to act urgently to stop a devastating outcome. It took legal precision, fast action, and relentless advocacy, but we achieved the result our client needed, and that sense of justice makes the challenge worth it.

What are some of your goals for the next 5 years?

In the next five years, I want to grow Weinberger Lawyers into the most respected firm for property disputes, complex transactions and property, commercial and regulatory litigation in NSW. We’re already the firm that gets the call when things go sideways or when things are challenging and need a safe pair of hands - I want to expand that reputation further, while maintaining our deeply personal and strategic service model.

I’m also focused on mentoring young lawyers and pushing the profession to be more inclusive, more client-focused, and more courageous in its advocacy.
