Most recently, Dr Winbanks served at FB Rice as a senior associate for nearly two years, and prior to that, she worked at Spruson & Ferguson, FPA Patent Attorneys, and at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute.
She specialises, the firm said in a statement, in patent matters for the biotechnology, agricultural and life sciences sectors, and practices in prosecuting and overseeing patent portfolios for local and international biotechnology companies, and works with local clients, including research institutes and universities.
The news follows the firm’s appointment of another principal in its Melbourne office in May of last year, its expansion into Manila in the same month, and its naming of Simon Potter as its new Australian managing director in December 2022.
Speaking about the hire, Dr Potter said: “We are delighted to welcome Catherine back to Spruson & Ferguson.”
“I look forward to seeing the positive impact Catherine will have for our firm, our clients and our Melbourne office.”
Dr Winbanks added: “I am thrilled to join the team at Spruson & Ferguson as a principal. This opportunity allows me to contribute my knowledge to a leading intellectual property firm and work with my talented colleagues to further elevate the firm and our clients’ success.”
