A Sydney law firm principal and prominent criminal defence solicitor has been charged with two domestic violence-related offences and has indicated he will contest the allegations in court later this year.

Ugur Nedim is the founder and principal of Sydney Criminal Lawyers, a firm that describes itself on its website as “Australia’s best criminal defence lawyers”, and has 28 years of experience as a criminal defence solicitor.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Nedim faced Byron Bay Local Court on Monday, 19 January, charged with two counts of stalking or intimidating with intent to instil fear of physical or mental harm.

The 51-year-old pleaded not guilty to both charges before Magistrate Kathy Crittenden and is scheduled to defend the allegations at a local court hearing on 30 June.

Police also applied for an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO) against Nedim, not only to protect the alleged female victim but also for the safety of another man.

The ADVO imposes strict restrictions on Nedim, which The Daily Telegraph shared included a prohibition on approaching or contacting the protected individuals in any way – except through a lawyer – and a ban on coming within 100 metres of any place where they live or work.

The order remains in place while the criminal proceedings continue.

Nedim was granted conditional bail by the police.

Under the conditions, he must reside at an address in the Cessnock area, maintain good behaviour, avoid committing any further offences, comply with the ADVO, and refrain from contacting any prosecution witnesses.

As stated on the Sydney Criminal Lawyers website, Nedim began his legal career in 1992 as a law clerk at a specialist criminal law firm and started practising as a court criminal defence lawyer in 1998.

In 2001, he founded Sydney Criminal Lawyers, originally known as Nedim Lawyers – Criminal Defence Specialists.

According to the firm’s website, it now operates 10 offices across NSW, representing clients in a wide range of criminal and traffic law matters.
