Award-winning boutique firm Hazelbrook Legal has appointed a disputes partner from a leading UK litigation practice, at which point it will operate as a full-service firm, with a materially expanded contentious capability.
Joshua Jeffries (pictured) is joining Hazelbrook Legal as a partner, coming across from UK-based Grosvenor Law, where he has served for nearly 15 years.
Transactional practices remain cyclical, whereas regulatory investigations, shareholder disputes, cross-border enforcement and international arbitration tend to be more counter-cyclical and resilient, Hazelbrook said, and for corporate firms, a credible disputes capability is increasingly a strategic hedge as well as a client retention tool.
“We are seeing sustained demand from boards and in-house teams for advisers who can manage the full life cycle of risk – from structuring and execution through to enforcement, investigation and arbitration. The growth of complex regulatory settings, geopolitical tension and cross-border trade disputes is reinforcing that demand,” the firm said.
Secondly, the appointment of Jeffries speaks to the movement of UK-qualified lawyers to Australia, the firm went on.
“Our incoming partner trained and practised in the UK at a leading international disputes practice and is relocating to Australia at a time when the Australian disputes and regulatory market is seen as offering genuine growth and opportunity,” Hazelbrook said.
Speaking about the appointment, Hazelbrook chief executive Annabel Griffin said: “We are a firm of people who are genuinely interested in, and invested in, our clients and their success. Which is why it’s great to be able to now support them in this new and important capacity.
“We are building a disputes and arbitration practice not as an add-on, but as a strategic pillar of the firm.”
