Simon Bellas (pictured) joined Jones Day’s Perth office last month. The construction lawyer will focus on projects and project-related disputes, with an emphasis on the energy sector.

Bellas was a partner at NRF for two-and-a-half years and a senior associate at Baker & McKenzie for seven years prior to that.

He takes the number of Jones Day partners in Australia to 15.

Bellas’ appointment follows the 1 April launch of Jones Day’s Perth office. In February, Lawyers Weekly reported that Allens partner Stephen McComish had been poached by Jones Day to lead the Perth office, the firm’s second on-the-ground presence in Australia.

Jones Day is the largest US-based firm to have a physical presence in Perth, and it joins global rivals Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance and Squire Sanders to have both Sydney and Perth offices.

Bellas’ move coincides with NRF’s hire of Clayton Utz partner Adrienne Parker to the firm’s construction and major projects practice.
