Two states welcome new Solicitor-Generals

Two states welcome new Solicitor-Generals

Lady Justice

The Law Society Northern Territory and the Law Society of Western Australia have welcomed the announcement of new Solicitor-Generals to each state, as well as multiple judicial appointments in WA.

Sonia Brownhill SC is replacing Michael Grant QC as the Solicitor-General for the Northern Territory, becoming the state's first female Solicitor-General.

Ms Brownhill was appointed Crown Counsel in 2005, joined the independent bar in 2011, and became only the third female to be appointed senior counsel in the Northern Territory under the Supreme Court (Senior Counsel) Rules in 2015.

"Ms Brownhill’s appointment is an important one, as it continues the growing trend of local lawyers being appointed to senior and leadership roles in the legal profession and the judiciary, as well as that of high-achieving women in the law," said Tass Liveris, president of the Law Society Northern Territory.

In WA, Peter Quinlan SC will take up the role of the Solicitor-General from 1 July, replacing Grant Donaldson SC, who stepped down at the end of his contract to return to private practice.

Meanwhile, Sandra De Maio and Anne Longden have been appointed to the Magistrates' Court of Western Australia and Children's Court of WA.

Lastly, Pamela Scott has been appointed as WA's first female Chief Commissioner of the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

"The Law Society supports gender equality in WA's Judiciary," said Elizabeth Needham, president of the Law Society of Western Australia.

"All appointments are and should be meritorious, taking into account the appointee's experience and standing, but there will always be more meritorious claimants than appointments and it is vital that when considering the meritorious claimants that the question of equality and diversity is addressed.

"Ms De Maio, Ms Longdon, Mr Quinlan SC and Commissioner Scott are all well-respected legal practitioners, very deserving of their appointments and will serve our state well."
