NSW crown solicitor to become NCAT president and judge
NSW has appointed a new Supreme Court judge and president of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Lea Armstrong has been announced in the position by the state’s Attorney-General, Mark Speakman, and will be sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on 31 October.

She will begin her five-year term as NCAT president on the same day.
Speaking on the appointment, Mr Speakman said “Ms Armstrong is an exceptional lawyer, a trailblazer and a proven leader who has served with distinction over the past three years as the state’s first female Crown Solicitor.”
“She has more than a quarter of century of experience in government and commercial law and is well equipped to lead the State’s super tribunal, NCAT.”
Prior to becoming Crown Solicitor, Ms Armstrong was the NSW Treasury’s first general counsel. She has also held senior roles in the Crown Solicitor’s office, as general counsel and assistant Crown Solicitor in commercial and administrative law.
Previously a lawyer with Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst), she was also an associate for now-retired High Court judge Michael McHugh AC QC.
She holds a Masters of Law from the University of NSW, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Australian National University.
Ms Armstrong replaces Justice Robertson Wright, who will now be serving in the common law division of the Supreme Court of NSW.
