WA appoints 8 new senior counsel
The Chief Justice of Western Australia’s Supreme Court has announced the appointment of eight new senior counsel.

The Honourable Justice Peter Quinlan announced on Tuesday, following the receipt of 32 applications, that seven barristers and one former State Solicitor’s Office practitioner would be appointed as SC.

The eight are: John Ley, John Hedges, Steven Penglis, Carolyn Thatcher, Gary Cobby, Alain Musikanth, Michael Feutrill and Mara Barone.
“Appointment as senior counsel is based on eminence in the practice of law, especially in advocacy, unquestioned integrity, availability and independence. A committee advises the Chief Justice on applications for appointment,” the court said in a statement.
The committee, chaired by Chief Justice Quinlan, comprised the President of the Court of Appeal, the Senior Judge of the Supreme Court, Senior Female Judge of the Supreme Court, the Senior Female Judge of the Court of Appeal, the President of the State Administrative Tribunal, the Senior Judge of the Federal Court resident in Perth, the Chief Judge of the Family Court and the Chief Judge of the District Court.
In response to the appointments, WA Law Society president Hayley Cormann said: “On behalf of the Law Society and the wider legal profession I congratulate the new senior counsel on their appointments.”
“Appointment as senior counsel is a rare honour granted to those practitioners who have demonstrated eminence in the practice of law especially in advocacy, together with unquestioned integrity, availability and independence. We wish each of them the very best in their appointments,” she noted.
