HSF poaches partners from rival globals

HSF poaches partners from rival globals

Herbert Smith Freehills has poached a partner from both Baker & McKenzie and Norton Rose Fulbright.

David Ryan, a former partner and global head of mining & metals with Bakers, will join the corporate team in the firm’s Sydney office; while David Lyons (pictured), a former finance partner with Norton Rose Fulbright, with join the Brisbane office’s finance team.

Ryan will work with HSF’s energy & resources clients on M&A and general corporate activity. Ryan has built a strong practice in the energy & resources sector with a focus on electricity and power and gas. His practice in HSF will continue to concentrate on M&A and providing general commercial advice.

Lyons has extensive experience in advising financial services clients on transactional, advisory/regulatory and corporate matters and encompasses infrastructure, resource and project finance, regulatory issues and capital markets, as well as corporate, property, acquisition, asset, agricultural and trade finance. Lyons also has a long-standing interest in business and trade in Asia and is a board member of a number of Asian business councils and associations.

Both appointments took effect early this month.

HSF’s Australia managing partner, Jason Ricketts, commented: “Herbert Smith Freehills remains focused on ensuring we have a strong and diverse team of legal expertise to deliver perceptive commercial advice to our clients.”

There has been some upheaval at HSF recently with the announcement that Gavin Bell and David Willis will leave their positions as joint CEOs in April next year.
