Exclusive: M+K to lose group head of deflated workplace team

The workplace relations practice at M+K Lawyers has suffered another blow with its group head accepting a role with Rigby Cooke.

Sam Eichenbaum (pictured) will join Rigby Cooke at the start of next year as a partner in the firm’s workplace relations team. He has been a principal at M+K for the past 10 years and was appointed national head of the workplace relations practice in 2011.

This is the second time this year that Rigby Cooke has raided the partnership of M+K Lawyers.

In July, Rigby Cooke poached workplace relations partner David McLaughlin along with his team consisting of senior associate Victoria Comino and legal assistant Jamie Brook.

M+K lost two more workplace relations partners, Philip Duffy and Rob Jackson, to Aitken partners in May.

This month, the firm sought to replenish its stocks with the appointment of special counsel Justine Ansell, a former in-house lawyer with the Australian Industry Group, who joined the workplace relations team in Brisbane.

Ansell’s appointment coincided with M+K’s acquisition of five-year-old boutique Blue Rock Law. Blue Rock principals George Haros and Alex Ninis joined the national firm this month, along with eight lawyers and three staff.

Rigby Cooke has confirmed that Eichenbaum starts at the firm in January 2015 and will not be bringing lawyers from M+K across with him.

Bill Karvela, executive chairman at Rigby Cooke, said Eichenbaum’s experience across local government authorities, multinationals, professional services and the automotive industry “will benefit many of our existing clients and bring us a new client base”.

Lawyers Weekly attempted to contact Eichenbaum but he was on leave at the time of publication.
