Rebecca Maslen-Stannage (pictured) – who won Dealmaker of the Year at the 2019 Australian Law Awards – has been appointed as senior partner and chair of the global LLP council for Herbert Smith Freehills.

Ms Maslen-Stannage joined HSF in 1994 and has served on the firm’s global council from 2012 to 2019, including as deputy senior partner from 2015. A partner in M&A and capital markets, she will continue to maintain her practice as well as perform the role of chair and senior partner.

Speaking about her appointment, she said: “I am proud of our incredible, diverse talent and positive culture and the fact that we are trusted by clients to advise on an impressive array of matters around the world.”

“I look forward to working with and leading the partnership council in its important role and supporting our CEO, Justin D'Agostino, and the executive team in achieving the next phase of our strategic goals.”

She takes over from James Palmer, who is stepping down from his position at the end of April after more than six years in the role. Commenting on his successor, he said that he shares the views of the HSF partnership that Ms Maslen-Stannage will be an “outstanding” chair and senior partner.

“She has exceptional experience, thinks deeply and strategically about issues and is incredibly respected both inside the firm and by clients and others outside. I greatly enjoyed working closely with her on the Council and look forward to her leadership and ambition for the firm,” he said.

Mr D'Agostino added that Ms Maslen-Stannage is “uniquely qualified” to take on her new roles.

“She has always excelled as a dynamic and inspirational leader. I look forward to working closely with her to realise the firm’s ambitions,” he posited.

The news follows Lawyers Weekly’s report, on Tuesday, 9 March, that HSF is paying every staff member a bonus of five per cent of their individual salariesso that all at the firm can share in its positive performance so far this year. The payments are to be made in addition to the firm’s usual 2021 bonus round.

Ms Maslen-Stannage was also one of two presenters in the first-ever Lawyers Weekly Masterclass, held last year, exploring how to successfully run a private business acquisition. To purchase this session, and learn more about Masterclasses hosted by Lawyers Weekly, click here.
