Building an innovative team is critical for large or small firms that want to stay competitive and adaptive. Below are the key elements you should foster to turn your team into an innovation powerhouse.
- Purpose
- Practice
- Change champions
- Positive leadership
- Continuing learning opportunities
Technology and innovation are not synonymous, but innovation can often involve the adoption of new technologies to streamline or improve processes. However, it’s important to remember that even if new technologies and software solutions look very appealing on the surface, they will fail as a solution if they add complexity instead of making things easier. A genuinely innovative team starts by identifying problems, not ideating solutions.
For innovation to be truly successful, it must have a purpose. It must: solve a problem, improve processes, or add value to your law firm or your team.
Practice
The ability to generate and implement innovative solutions doesn’t come all at once – it’s a skill that your team must build up over time. Don’t start your innovation journey with large or risky projects; instead, prioritise initiatives that gradually increase in scope. This gradual approach will also reduce internal resistance to change and maintain your team’s motivation.
Change champions
Not everyone has an affinity for change. In fact, the legal profession is particularly renowned for its natural aversion to change and risk-taking. That’s why it’s crucial to recognise and support change agents who have a talent for identifying new opportunities and proactively suggest innovative solutions early on. Offer them opportunities to tackle a few small projects first, so the rest of the team can witness the benefits and be inspired to follow suit.
Positive leadership
Being a good change leader is not just about project management skills and tech-savviness. You must also master the ability to build trust and create a safe space for others to bring their ideas. Communication and collaboration skills are crucial to help the team successfully navigate their innovation journey.
Great innovators share three common traits:
- Communication skills to gain the trust of their team and successfully navigate the innovation journey;
- Collaboration skills to let others feel confident in sharing new ideas and approaching problems from different angles; and
- Leadership skills to set high goals whilst still creating a safe space for people to operate.
Innovation is first and foremost about learning and adaptability – so make sure to give your team ongoing support to learn or refine their skills.
