Ashwin Nair (pictured) has joined HFW’s Perth office from maritime boutique Cocks Macnish, prior to which he spent three years as a claims executive at The Shipowners’ Club based in its Singapore office.

He specialises, the firm said, in shipping, admiralty and marine insurance, acting for shipowners and charterers and their P&I Clubs and other insurers of marine risks, with a particular interest in the offshore energy and commercial fishing industries.

His practice covers a range of marine casualty management, disputes and litigation, and advisory and transactional work.

The appointment follows the release of the firm’s financial year 2022 results, which saw 8 per cent growth.

Earlier this year, HFW Australian managing partner Gavin Vallely (pictured) spoke on The Lawyers Weekly Show about why Australia is such a big part of the global firm’s growth strategy. Sector-focused growth is helping the firm flourish here, he said, and it could well grow by 50 per cent in the next two years in Australia, he proclaimed at the time.

Speaking about the appointment, Mr Vallely said that he is delighted to welcome Mr Nair to the firm.

“Ashwin brings depth of experience in shipping and marine insurance, and his experience working across a wide range of matters and his local knowledge will enhance our offering to our Australian and international clients,” he said.

HFW global head of shipping Paul Dean noted: “As the world’s top shipping and maritime law firm, Ashwin’s appointment further reinforces our capability in Australia and Asia-Pacific and underlines our commitment to providing global market-leading services to clients across the sector.”

Mr Nair added that he is “really excited” to be joining HFW.

The firm, he said, “has an enviable reputation in the shipping sector in Australia, as well as the depth and support of a large global network. I am looking forward to being part of the firm’s continuing growth and success.”
