Hosted by legalsuper, Leo Cussen Centre for Law, and the Australasian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA), the Virtual Careers Fair will be held on Thursday, 20 October, online, with a keynote address from his honour Justice Wilson of the Federal Circuit and Family Court.

Industry engagement and careers manager at Leo Cussen Centre for Law Alex Giannopoulos said that the event would be an “exciting opportunity” for law students and younger lawyers to explore different career options.

“As not-for-profits with a shared vision of supporting the legal profession, Leo Cussen Centre for Law, ALPMA and legalsuper are proud to be jointly hosting this valuable online event for law students, graduates and early-career lawyers,” he said.

“There has never been a more exciting time to be a law graduate in Australia. Graduates have more career options than ever before, so it’s critical to understand the available pathways. The 2022 Legal Virtual Careers Fair will allow students and graduates to hear from current practitioners and hiring managers across a variety of firms and practice areas.”

Attendees will hear from lawyers working in a range of practice areas, including family law, wills and estates, corporate law and finance law and receive tips and tricks from hiring managers about how to stand out in the recruitment market.

Students will also hear from smaller and mid-size firms, partners, HR managers and junior lawyers, with a focus on exploring other options besides the clerkships and grad positions generally offered at BigLaw firms.

“While law graduates have more career options than ever, research shows there is also enormous strain on the mental health of today’s law students and legal practitioners as they navigate their way through the profession. The fair aims to support attendees with practical tools and information to help them steer their careers in the right direction,” Mr Giannopoulos added.

“Law students often think a clerkship or graduate program in a large firm is the only way to enter the profession. While these programs can be incredibly rewarding, the reality is that most employment opportunities exist in small and medium-sized organisations that can provide equally meaningful experiences to graduates. The fair will showcase this and give graduates an opportunity to compare various practice areas across organisations of different shapes and sizes.”
