He is, W+K said in a statement, a health law specialist with over 10 years of experience representing public health services and health practitioners in the full range of issues affecting the sector, including in medical negligence proceedings, coronial inquests, and regulatory matters.
He has a particular interest in cyber and privacy issues in the government health sector and a broad pro bono practice in mental health and refugee advocacy, the firm went on.
The news follows a year of significant growth for W+K.
In January, it poached a team of six from fellow BigLaw firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth, then added a team from MinterEllison later that month. In March, it nabbed a partner from King & Wood Mallesons to create a “dual expertise” offering for the defence of class action proceedings, and in June, it promoted 34 lawyers to more senior roles, including four to its partnership.
Speaking about the appointment, W+K head of health Chris Spain said: “I’m thrilled to welcome Edward to our team.
“His experience is perfectly aligned with our growing health practice, and he has a very strong reputation in the market.”
Mr Smith added: “It’s a privilege to join a team of such respected health law practitioners.
“Wotton + Kearney has built an impressive practice in this area, and it’s exciting to be a part of that.”
