This time in Sydney, the symposium brings together another all-star lineup of legal experts – including keynote speaker High Court Justice Robert Beech-Jones.

Justice Beech-Jones was sworn in as a judge of the High Court of Australia in November 2023. Having presided over some of the nation’s largest and most complex class action matters, His Honour’s insights and expertise on the current state of play in the world of class actions litigation and corporate conduct are not to be missed.

Hosted by Deputy Editor of The Age newspaper, Mathew Dunckley, this year’s event brings not only Justice Beech-Jones to the mic, but also Maurice Blackburn’s National Head of Class Actions, Rebecca Gilsenan, who will provide an overview of the class action landscape in Australia.

After that, a variety of domestic and international experts in class actions, corporate conduct, data privacy and advocates in both consumer and shareholder matters will take the stage.

Mark is a partner at Labaton Keller Sucharow LLP, with offices in New York and Washington, DC. With more than three decades of experience, his practice focuses on domestic and international securities litigation. Mark advises leading pension funds, investment managers, and other institutional investors from around the world on their legal remedies when impacted by securities fraud and corporate governance breaches. 

William A D Edwards KC
Barrister

William is one of Australia’s leading class actions barristers, with expertise in shareholder actions, consumer actions, mass tort actions, product liability actions and human rights actions. He has a national practice, regularly appearing in federal and state class actions jurisdictions, both at trial and on appeal. 

Valeska Bloch
Partner and Head of Cyber, Allens

Valeska is a leading cybersecurity, technology and data practitioner with extensive experience advising top 20 ASX-listed companies, government agencies and others on cyber risk management, cyber incident response, data governance, and related regulatory investigations and enforcement action.

Dr Katharine Kemp
Associate Professor, Faculty of Law & Justice, UNSW Sydney

Dr Katharine Kemp is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law & Justice, UNSW Sydney, and Deputy Director of the Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation. Katharine’s research focuses on competition, consumer protection and data privacy regulation, particularly the intersection of these areas. She has published widely in these fields and is frequently sought out to consult with industry, regulators and policymakers. 

Elizabeth O’Shea
Chair of Digital Rights Watch Australia and Principal Lawyer at Maurice Blackburn

Lizzie is an internationally renowned expert on digital privacy rights and the intersection between technology, privacy and the law. Lizzie is also a Principal Lawyer at Maurice Blackburn and a founder and the Chair of Digital Rights Watch. Lizzie has been a lawyer for over a decade and has local and international experience in a wide array of court jurisdictions. More recently, Lizzie completed her Masters in Law at Columbia University in New York, and subsequently worked on projects that use digital technology to advance human rights. Among her many credentials, she is the author of ‘Future Histories’ which looks at issues closely related to digital technology and human rights.

Peta Stevenson
Partner at King & Wood Mallesons (Dispute Resolution; Competition Litigation)

Peta is a partner in KWM’s national competition team, where she specialises in ACCC investigations, enforcement proceedings and follow-on damages actions, including class actions. She is the executive ally for the firm’s LGBTIQ+ network.

Mathew Dunckley
Deputy Editor, The Age

Mathew has worked in the media for more than 20 years. He was the Melbourne bureau chief at the Australian Financial Review as well as its Victorian political reporter. He then worked as national business editor for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Mathew has been the digital editor at The Age since 2019.
