Thomas Gaffney has joined the partnership at national law firm Thomson Geer.
BigLaw firm Thomson Geer has promoted Thomas Gaffney to partner, as part of its continued expansion.
Gaffney has operated in the Australian and English high courts and Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, and more than six Australian state courts, and acted on behalf of the Commonwealth government and private sector clients.
He joined Thomson Geer in May 2025, as part of an acquisition of Ashurst’s Canberra office, where he was counsel for over 12 years. He also previously chaired the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration’s ACT committee.
On Gaffney’s promotion, chief executive partner Adrian Tembel highlighted “the respect and support from his colleagues in Canberra for a while and, in a short time, has earned the respect of many of his new Thomson Geer colleagues”.
Gaffney brings experience in civil and commercial litigation, administrative review proceedings, and commercial and government disputes, the firm said.
Tembel also praised his work across “defence capability acquisition and sustainment, construction and infrastructure projects, public and administrative law, energy and resources, and digital and cyber disputes”.
The appointment comes shortly after John Emmerig joined Thomson Geer’s Sydney office in its litigation and disputes practice, and less than a month after Harshane Kahagalle was appointed partner in its property and construction team.
