John Emmerig (pictured) has joined Thomson Geer as a partner in its litigation and disputes practice area, based in its firm’s Sydney office.

Before joining the national law firm, Emmerig spent over 13 years at global law firm Jones Day, where he served as a partner in its global disputes group.

With more than 36 years of experience, the national law firm expressed that Emmerig has a “national reputation” for his work on high-stakes domestic and cross-border litigation, class actions, and regulatory matters, advising both leading Australian companies and multinational corporations.

His practice spans class action defence, major commercial disputes, and regulatory and government litigation.

Thomson Geer outlined that his extensive experience encompasses more than 40 class actions, numerous major commercial and government litigation matters, over 20 royal commissions and parliamentary inquiries, and more than 35 regulatory matters involving ASIC, ACCC, and APRA.

Adrian Tembel, chief executive partner at Thomson Geer, highlighted that Emmerig’s expertise will bolster the firm’s litigation and dispute resolution team while strengthening its commitment to delivering top-tier results for clients.

“We welcome John to our firm. His experience will bolster the capabilities of our litigation and dispute resolution team and reinforce our commitment to quality service and outcomes for clients,” Tembel said.

Speaking about the new role, Emmerig shared how he was pleased to join Thomson Geer, describing the firm as a trusted adviser to business and government leaders handling high-stakes disputes.

“Major organisations need the best advice when they are involved in high-stakes disputes. Thomson Geer is an outstanding firm that is trusted by business and government leaders to do just that, and I’m pleased to be part of the team,” Emmerig said.

The news follows the firm’s addition of a planning and development partner from Addisons at the end of 2025, the appointment of a new tax specialist partner from EY in late November, the poaching of a health and safety partner from Holding Redlich earlier that month, and its appointment of a partner and special counsel to its banking and finance practice at the start of October.
