Richard Robinson (pictured) has joined Kain Lawyers as a director in the firm’s competition and regulation team, as the firm continues to sharpen its focus on this fast-evolving and increasingly critical area of practice.

In a statement, the national law firm said Robinson’s appointment would further “strengthen” the firm’s competition law capability, deepening its expertise across areas central to its M&A, private equity, energy, and infrastructure practices.

Before joining the firm, Robinson spent nearly three years at global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, where he held the role of special counsel.

He brings more than two decades of experience across competition and consumer law and energy regulation, with deep expertise in complex merger clearances, access regimes, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) investigations and enforcement, as well as strategic regulatory advisory work.

Michael Garry, managing director of Kain Lawyers, shared that Robinson’s appointment would further strengthen the firm’s competition law focus by bringing deep regulatory and merger clearance expertise to clients navigating Australia’s rapidly evolving regulatory landscape.

“Richard’s appointment strengthens the firm’s focus on competition law, providing our clients access to his deep knowledge and expertise across this rapidly changing area of law,” Garry said.

“Richard’s diverse competition and regulatory experience, combined with his deep understanding of Australia’s merger clearance and authorisation processes, provides a valuable asset to clients looking for a strategic approach to merger clearance, access arrangements and enforcement and investigation responses.”

Garry added: “We look forward to Richard’s contribution to the continued growth of the firm and the success of our clients.”

Speaking about his new role, Robinson said he is excited to join Kain Lawyers, where he looks forward to helping deliver stronger outcomes for clients and contributing to the firm’s continued growth and momentum in the market.

“For over 20 years, I have provided extensive commercial and regulatory advice across a diverse range of sectors,” Robinson said.

“The recent legislative changes to the ACCC merger clearance and authorisation processes underscore the importance of experienced teams that work together with clients seamlessly to integrate competition strategy into the deal process.

“I am excited to join Kain Lawyers and contribute my competition and regulatory expertise to the team for the delivery of client successes.”
