Melbourne-based firm Archer Scott Lawyers has made a significant growth play, bolstering its national presence through a strategic Sydney acquisition and the recruitment of a senior M&A lawyer from BigLaw firm Ashurst.
Archer Scott Lawyers has accelerated its national expansion strategy, strengthening both its geographic footprint and corporate capability through what it describes as “two significant growth moves”.
As part of its growth strategy, the Melbourne-based firm has acquired BSV Property and Commercial, a longstanding Sydney-based firm with a strong reputation across property, commercial, finance, and wills and estates law.
Complementing the acquisition, Archer Scott has further strengthened its corporate capability with the appointment of experienced corporate lawyer Scott Colvin as a partner.
Colvin joins the firm with a breadth of experience spanning some of Australia’s leading law firms, including Dentons, Holding Redlich, Mills Oakley, and, most recently, Ashurst, where he practised as a senior associate.
He brings significant expertise in advising founders, corporates, private equity funds, and investment managers on complex mergers and acquisitions, capital raising, corporate governance, commercial transactions, and business exits.
BSV Property and Commercial director Frank Back will remain closely involved following the acquisition, stepping into a senior partner role at Archer Scott and continuing to work with the existing team.
The existing team will remain in place, with the firm saying this will provide “continuity for clients” by allowing them to continue working with familiar lawyers, while benefiting from the resources of a larger national firm and a wider suite of specialist legal services.
Archer Scott Lawyers national managing partner Warner Scott noted that BSV has built a strong reputation as a trusted adviser in Sydney’s property and commercial markets and emphasised that clients should expect a smooth and uninterrupted transition.
“BSV Property and Commercial has built an outstanding reputation in the Sydney market, particularly in property and commercial law,” Scott said.
“Frank Back and his team have earned the trust of clients over many years, and we are delighted that Frank will continue as senior partner at Archer Scott.
“For BSV clients, it is business as usual. Clients will continue to work with the same people and receive the same trusted service, while benefiting from the broader resources and specialist expertise of Archer Scott.”
Scott added that Colvin’s appointment significantly enhances the firm’s ability to support clients through key stages of business growth and investment, describing it as “highly complementary” to the acquisition of BSV Property and Commercial.
“Scott Colvin is an exceptional M&A lawyer with experience across high-value, complex transactions and a strong understanding of the needs of founders, private capital and growth businesses,” Scott said.
“His appointment is highly complementary to the BSV acquisition.
“Together, these developments strengthen Archer Scott’s ability to support clients through every stage of business growth, from establishment and expansion through to succession, investment, and exit.”
