Hamilton Locke, which is owned by HPX Group and has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Auckland, has started the new financial year with five new partners to its ranks – four of whom have come over from rival BigLaw firm K&L Gates.

Partners Betsy-Ann Howe, Matthew Cridland, and Annalie Mitchelson have all joined Hamilton Locke’s tax team in Sydney, with Howe set to serve as the firm’s head of tax. Samuel Brown has also joined as a partner, joining the firm’s real estate practice in Sydney.

Lawyers Weekly understands that, between the four partners, 10 team members from K&L Gates are also coming across, with their starting dates set to be staggered across July.

Elsewhere, the firm has promoted one lawyer to partner, eight to special counsel, and eight to senior associate.

Penelope Nicholls, in the firm’s private team, has been elevated to the partnership, having first joined the BigLaw practice in 2022.

The firm’s new special counsel are: Claudia Bertone, Cormac Foley, David O’Carroll, Ed Macgregor, Hannah Jones, Nicholas Pavouris, Simon Barcham, and Thomas Wilson.

And its new senior associates are: Chris Lin, Jasmine Hawkes, Lachlan Pethick, Maddie Morgan, Nimrod Amanuel, Peter Mutema, Ramin Beigi, and Ruth Fesseha.

Speaking about the hires and promotions, Hamilton Locke managing partner Brit Ibanez said: “We continue to build upon the depth of expertise within our firm in response to evolving client needs.”

“Betsy-Ann, Matthew, Annalie and Samuel bring the specialised experience that matters to our clients right now, and a genuine alignment to our people-centric approach. We are excited to welcome them and their teams to Hamilton Locke,” she said.

“I also congratulate Penelope on her promotion to Partner, and our new special counsel and senior associates.”

“They are exceptional lawyers who embody our commitment to excellence and our values, and we are proud to be a place where they can continue to grow in their careers,” Ibanez continued.
