A former director of public prosecutions has joined the state’s Industrial Relations Commission as a deputy president and judicial member.
Lloyd Babb SC (pictured) has been appointed as a deputy president and judicial member of the NSW Industrial Relations Commission and will be sworn into the role on 28 July.
Before taking on the role, Babb served as Director of Public Prosecutions in both NSW and the Northern Territory, leading the state and territory’s prosecution agencies through complex and high-profile matters.
Recognising his more than three decades of experience across public service, prosecution and advocacy, the Attorney-General’s office described Babb as “one of Australia’s leading senior counsel”.
Throughout the course of his career, he has appeared in complex criminal trials and appeals, including matters before the High Court, and has developed a reputation for independent decision making and legal leadership.
Babb’s legal career began with the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in 1993, where he worked as a solicitor before being called to the NSW Bar two years later.
Over the following years, he held a series of senior legal roles, including Crown prosecutor, public defender and Crown advocate, before being appointed NSW Director of Public Prosecutions in 2011.
After leading the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decade, he was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions for the Northern Territory, serving in the role from 2022 to 2025.
Babb’s appointment follows a broader expansion of the commission, with deputy president Janet McDonald and four additional commissioners joining the tribunal earlier this month.
Attorney-General Michael Daley welcomed the appointment, saying Babb’s extensive legal expertise, distinguished leadership and proven ability to navigate complex and sensitive matters would further strengthen the commission.
“Lloyd Babb SC is an outstanding lawyer with a formidable intellect and an exceptional breadth of legal experience,” A-G Daley said.
“He brings deep expertise in criminal law, professional leadership and a proven capacity to deal with complex and sensitive matters.
“His appointment is a welcome addition to the Industrial Relations Commission and will further strengthen its ability to serve the people of this state.”
Acting Minister for Industrial Relations and Work Health and Safety Daniel Mookhey also welcomed the appointment, emphasising how it would reinforce the commission’s capacity to uphold fair workplace relations across NSW.
“The Industrial Relations Commission plays a vital role in maintaining fair, balanced and effective workplace relations across New South Wales, and it must be supported by commissioners of the highest calibre,” Mookhey said.
“Lloyd Babb SC brings a wealth of legal experience, sound judgment and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
“This appointment, along with the recent announcement of four additional commissioners, will ensure the commission remains a well-resourced tribunal that promotes fairness in the workplace.”
