The Legal Aid NT Helpline has marked 30 years of helping Territorians access legal information, support, and referrals, cementing its role as a vital gateway to justice across the Northern Territory.
The Legal Aid NT Helpline has marked three decades of connecting Territorians with justice, providing a vital pathway to legal information, advice, and referrals for those seeking support across the Northern Territory.
The not-for-profit organisation provides a broad range of services, including legal information, education, advice and representation, family dispute resolution, and community legal education, helping Territorians navigate the legal system with greater confidence.
During the 2025–26 financial year, the Legal Aid NT Helpline responded to more than 21,000 calls and provided assistance to a further 3,806 people through referrals from SupportLink.
Originally launched in January 1996 as the Legal Information Line, the service began with a small team of paralegal officers providing legal information across family and criminal law matters.
During its first year of operation, the service responded to 2,970 telephone inquiries, with staff providing legal information over the phone and distributing printed resources to callers.
As more Territorians sought accessible, early legal assistance, Legal Aid NT expanded the service to better meet community demand.
That growth culminated in a major transformation in 2011, when the service was redeveloped into a dedicated, standalone helpline and rebranded as the Legal Aid Helpline, reflecting a broader shift towards early intervention and preventative legal services.
The evolution has transformed the way the service operates, streamlining service delivery through centralised call handling, enhanced staff training and supervision, improved technology and data capabilities, and an increased capacity to assist more Territorians each year.
Last week, Legal Aid NT celebrated the milestone with a formal anniversary event, reflecting on the helpline’s journey from a small telephone information service into one of the Northern Territory’s leading gateways to legal support.
Attorney-General Michelle Rowland attended the event, joining Legal Aid NT representatives to recognise the service’s 30-year contribution to the community and its continued role in strengthening access to justice across the Territory.
