International firm Jones Day has bolstered its tax capabilities with the appointment of an of counsel lawyer from big four firm EY.
Thomas Ickeringill (pictured) has joined Jones Day as of counsel within the firm’s global tax practice, based in its Melbourne office.
Before joining the firm, Ickeringill served as a tax controversy partner at big four firm EY, where he advised multinational clients on large-scale disputes involving Australian Taxation Office audits, litigation preparation, and settlement negotiations.
Bringing nearly 15 years of experience across Australia and the United Kingdom, he has built a practice focused on complex tax disputes, with particular expertise in international tax, transfer pricing, mutual agreement procedures, and anti-avoidance measures.
Jones Day’s Melbourne partner-in-charge, Dr Niv Tadmore, said Ickeringill’s appointment reflects the growing need for cross-border tax expertise as businesses face an increasingly complex international tax environment.
“Tom is an important strategic addition to the growing Jones Day global tax controversy team,” Tadmore said.
“Cross-border tax disputes involving two or more countries are on the rise, chiefly driven by the evolving global geo-economic conditions and the unfolding post-BEPS dynamics. In Australia, transfer pricing, intangibles and GAAR disputes remain key focus areas.”

The international firm’s tax practice advises clients across the full spectrum of tax matters, spanning transactional advice, strategic tax planning, tax controversy, and litigation.
Ed Kennedy, co-leader of Jones Day’s tax practice, highlighted Ickeringill’s rare combination of technical tax expertise and litigation experience, saying his track record navigating complex disputes, audits, and settlement negotiations for multinational clients will further strengthen Jones Day’s global tax capabilities.
“Tom brings a rare combination of technical experience and hands-on litigation experience across tax controversy, transfer pricing, and anti-avoidance matters, developed over nearly 15 years advising clients through some of the most complex disputes facing the ATO and HMRC,” Kennedy said.
“His track record guiding multinational clients through audits, reviews, and settlement negotiations, together with his standing in the international tax community, makes him a strong addition to our tax practice.

Outside his legal practice, Ickeringill plays an active role in the international tax community.
Beyond his legal practice, Ickeringill maintains an active presence in the international tax community, where he chairs The Tax Institute’s International Masterclass organising committee and serves on the executive committee of the Australian branch of the International Fiscal Association.
