Many in-house lawyers in today's market are experiencing company-wide restructuring and pressure to reduce costs. Demonstrating increased value to your employer in these times will serve you well in preserving your role as well as developing your skills and relationships.
There are a number of ways to leverage your position in the current environment, such as reviewing carefully what legal work could be undertaken in-house rather than being outsourced.
Other ways you could provide more value, and at the same time broaden your skills and develop internal relationships, is to look for new areas to assist the business, such as developing systems to utilise in-house legal services better or contributing to regulatory and/or compliance frameworks. Another possibility is to run additional training for the business.
In summary, being astute to business needs, cost-cutting and looking for innovative and practical ways to add value will go a long way to ensure you are regarded as a valuable resource that the business cannot do without!
