International practice Allen & Overy announced the appointment of Thomas E. Jones as partner with effect from 1 May, 2006. Jones will work alongside Beijing’s managing partner Peter Thorp and some 70 members of the China Group in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and New York. Allen & Overy pegged the move as part of efforts to strengthen its team at the senior level in China to help meet the soaring demands of its clients active in the Chinese market.

Jones is qualified in the US and Hong Kong, and is a fluent Mandarin speaker. He was previously at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, where he headed the firm’s China practice for 10 years and most recently was head of their China ACT (anti-trust, trade and competition) practice based in Beijing. He has been resident in Asia since 1980, with more than 25 years of broad-based experience in China. During that time he participated in transactions that were the first of their kind in China. His practice reflects a broad diversity of corporate, commercial and M&A transactions in a variety of sectors including oil & gas, power, finance and infrastructure.

Jones is ranked by Chambers Global 2006 as a leading lawyer in the areas of corporate and M&A. He is also listed in Asialaw Leading Lawyers 2006 as one of the most highly-acclaimed legal experts in the “competition/anti-trust”, “project finance” and “M&A” categories.

Allen & Overy’s Beijing managing partner Peter Thorp, comments: “[Jones’] extensive China experience, language skills and strong reputation in the China market will greatly enhance the capabilities of Allen & Overy’s China practice and further bolster our US law capability in China, in partnership with our New York office and other 230 US lawyers in the firm.”

Allen & Overy has more than 200 US-qualified lawyers around the world providing comprehensive legal advice in areas including capital markets, banking and finance, corporate and M&A, litigation, tax, real estate and others.
