District Court judge appointed in Western Australia

This marks the second move in the past fortnight in Western Australia, after A-G Buti recently appointed a new magistrate to the Magistrates Court and Children’s Court of Western Australia.

McGivern’s appointment will increase capacity within the District Court and assist the allocation of judicial resources among the Children’s Court of Western Australia and the State Administrative Tribunal.

Currently the principal registrar of the District Court after her appointment in 2022, McGivern brings almost 30 years of experience across practice, academia, and court administration.

Admitted to practice in Western Australia in 1997 and later earning a PhD in law in 2005, McGivern has experience in senior roles in private practice and higher education, with expertise in health law, civil liability, insurance law, and professional indemnity matters.

As of 2020, McGivern has been an ordinary member of the State Administrative Tribunal, primarily in its civil, commercial and human rights streams.

For extended periods, she held positions on the board and council of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration, while also serving as a member and chair of the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS).

Speaking on McGivern’s appointment, Buti recognised the achievements and extensive experience that she will bring to the role.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Brenda McGivern as a judge of the District Court of Western Australia,” Buti said.

“Dr McGivern is an accomplished legal practitioner, academic and court administrator whose extensive experience will serve the Western Australian community well.

“Her appointment will further strengthen the district court and support the effective administration of justice across a number of important jurisdictions.

“I congratulate Dr McGivern on her appointment and wish her every success in the role.”

McGivern will commence the role on 5 October.
