Corrs Chambers Westgarth has appointed US litigator David Chiappetta as a special counsel in its Melbourne litigation team.

Chiappetta joins Corrs from Bingham McCutchen LLP, where he was a partner in the San Francisco office. Prior to that he was a partner at the Silicon Valley office of Perkins Coie LLP.

Chiapetta's practice covers commercial disputes with a focus on competition law, consumer protection claims, contract disputes and class actions. He also advises on competition law matters, and has acted for clients before government enforcement agencies in relation to mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and investigations.

His experience includes obtaining a $US711.2 million ($776 million) judgment on behalf of Facebook against "the king of Spam", Sanford Wallace; winning a defence verdict for Google in a consumer class action relating to its online advertising policies and practices; and successfully obtaining clearance from the US Federal Trade Commission for Tesoro Petroleum Corporation's $US2 billion acquisition of an oil refinery, terminal and service stations from Shell Oil Company.
