The former head of DLA Piper's Islamic finance group and Saudi practice, Oliver Agha, and Emirati lawyer Dr Al Shamsi, have launched a new firm - Ahga & Shamsi - in Abu Dhabi.

Despite reports suggesting that the economic cloud has well and truly reached the region, Agha and Dr Shamsi have gone ahead and opened their new firm, which will employ six lawyers and focus primarily on Islamic finance, energy, restructuring and project finance.

As reported by The Lawyer, Ahga & Shamsi have established a non-exclusive relationship with US firm Pillsbury, giving Pillsbury its first UAE affiliation.

Ahga & Shamsi is reportedly also firming an alliance with a Saudi firm, but at this stage the Saudi firm has not been named.

Agha left DLA Piper three months ago, taking with him a team of associates.
