Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has officially launched the HSF AI Tracker, a free-to-use AI-powered tool that offers insights into the “core AI principles and regulations” issued by governments and the “broader” legal frameworks applicable to AI technology.

In a statement, the global law firm indicated that the introduction of this new tool was created to address the “growing client need” to navigate the “fragmented” and swiftly changing landscape of strategies and regulations that governments are implementing to regulate AI.

The HSF AI Tracker will initially cover 12 jurisdictions across the UK, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia, with the firm revealing that “there is a roadmap to add others”.

The firm committed to ensuring that the tool will be “updated regularly”, enabling users to effectively monitor significant legal developments in “case law and court decisions”.

Alexander Amato-Cravero, director of emerging technology advisory and legal operations advisory at HSF, highlighted that the tool is designed to streamline the compliance process with AI regulations.

“Effective AI risk management demands that organisations understand and monitor changes in the laws and regulations that apply to them. The rapid pace at which AI policy is evolving, combined with increasing fragmentation between approaches taken by policymakers worldwide, makes this extremely challenging for businesses with multinational footprints,” he said.

“Our aim is to simplify the process, helping those in legal, risk, and compliance teams to cut through the noise and quickly identify key AI policy and regulatory information across key jurisdictions.”

The tool was developed by the HSF’s technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) data and emerging technologies group, and during its pilot phase, it was utilised over “5,500 times” by individuals from various industry sectors.

Julian Lincoln, partner and head of TMT and digital for HSF in Australia, emphasised that the tool assists its global clients in navigating the evolving legal landscape driven by AI, enabling them to make well-informed decisions.

“Our clients are navigating rapid technological change in a world where the law is frequently evolving to accommodate it. With such a complex regulatory landscape, understanding the impact of policy and law on AI development is essential for our clients as they access the transformative potential of this emerging technology,” Lincoln stated.

“Our AI Tracker provides a snapshot of the AI policy and regulation across the world’s leading tech hubs, supporting our clients both in Australia and globally to make informed decisions that enable them to safely manage their innovation and digitalisation journey.”
