AustLII has today taken out the prize for "best openness initiative" from .auDA, the Internet domain name administrators of Australia.

The award recognised AustLII for enabling users to access an increased amount of legal materials and knowledge, for continuing to offer free-access to the site and picking up a high degree of usage in the process, as well as for inspiring similar models of free-access to law around the world.

In a brief statement released today, AustLII founders Professor Andrew Mowbrak of the University of Technology and Professor Graham Greenleaf of the University of NSW said: "we were motivated to create AustLII by the belief that everyone has the right to obtain the details of the laws they live under, and that the rule of law, business efficiency, education and better government would benefit from free access to the law".
