Other speakers include the Federal MP for Melbourne, Adam Bandt, Maurice Blackburn social justice practice group head Lizzie O'Shea and well known Melbourne lawyer and Gordon Legal founder, Peter Gordon.

"The reasons I think it's important is to support the principle of free speech," Gordon told Lawyers Weekly. "Like many others, I have been concerned by the heavy-handed reactions of governments, in particular the US Government, and their preparedness to invoke the spectre of criminal sanctions, to suppress information."

Jennifer Robinson, the Australian born lawyer with the London firm Finers Stephen Innocent who is part of Assange's UK legal team, will also address the meeting via a live videolink.

"We are keen to show Mr Assange and his legal team that Australians are outraged by attempts to stifle his freedom of speech and extradite him to an uncertain legal fate in Sweden," high profile Melbourne lawyer Rob Stary said.

Assange is currently on bail for alleged sexual offences against two Swedish women. His extradition hearing is set to commence in London next week.
