Michael Hawkins AM has been appointed the inaugural CEO and principal registrar of the ART, following on from his current role as registrar of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).
He brings, the A-G’s Department noted in a statement, a “significant understanding” of the AAT’s work, both from his current role as registrar and from having served as a part-time AAT member from 2016 to 2022, as well as “a wealth of experience” from a variety of other senior leadership roles.
“I congratulate him on his appointment and thank him for his leadership of the AAT’s important work towards establishing the ART,” the A-G noted.
Hawkins will serve a five-year term and was assessed as suitable for appointment by an independent assessment panel through a transparent and merit-based process.
The ART is set to commence on 14 October 2024.
Elsewhere, the federal government has appointed 17 members to the AAT and 20 members to the ART.
